From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Whale (origin Old English hƿæl) is the common name for various marine mammals of the order Cetacea. The term whale sometimes refers to all cetaceans, but more often it excludes dolphins and porpoises, which belong to suborder Odontoceti (toothed whales). This suborder also includes the sperm whale, killer whale, pilot whale, and beluga whale. The other Cetacean suborder Mysticeti (baleen whales), are filter feeders that eat small organisms caught by straining seawater through a comblike structure found in the mouth called baleen. This suborder includes the blue whale, the humpback whale, the bowhead whale and the minke whale. All Cetacea have forelimbs modified as fins, a tail with horizontal flukes, and nasal openings (blowholes) on top of the head. Whales range in size from the blue whale, the largest animal known to have ever existed at 35 m (115 ft) and 150 tonnes (150 LT; 170 ST), to various pygmy species, such as the pygmy sperm whale at 3.5 m (11 ft). Whales collectively inhabit all the world's oceans and number in the millions, with annual population growth rate estimates for various species ranging from 3-13%. For centuries, whales have been hunted for meat and as a source of raw materials. By the middle of the 20th century, however, industrial whaling had left many species seriously endangered, leading to the end of whaling in all but a few countries. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Would it be bad if a Sea World whale jumped into the crowd and gobbled up a tourist whale eating ice cream? Q. Tourist whales are the only reason these magnificent creatures are taken from their natural habitat and put into tiny areas where they then occasionally act like the animals that they are. Would it really be so bad if a killer whale ate a tourist whale? Asked by Patches O'Houlihan - Fri Feb 26 16:23:50 2010 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. funny you should ask that. on cnn tonight they had a press conference with sea world. it was brought up by a reporter that these animals can jump 15-20 feet in the air. what would if it jumped over the top of the tank and landed in the audience. never happened but it could in theory. sea world chose not to answer the reporter's question. all I can say is I hope it never happens and if he is going to eat ice cream I hope he isn't lactose intolerant. Answered by Deborah - Fri Feb 26 20:52:21 2010 What's the difference between a whale and a dolphin? Q. I've notice that several small, toothed whales (like Beluga Whale, Pilot Whale, Bottlenose Whale) look very dolphin-like in appearance. What physical features make these species a whale and not a dolphin? Or is it only a matter of size? Asked by Shiomi Ryuu - Fri Jan 5 03:43:44 2007 - - 3 Answers - 3 Comments A. Dolphins are types of whales, they belong to the toothed whale section, as do killer and sperm whales. The other type are baleen whales, that typically strain plankton etc for food. So, in short, all dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins. Answered by Terracinese - Fri Jan 5 04:21:13 2007 Will the murderous orca whale at Sea World in Orlando be destroyed within the next two weeks?
Q. I was planning to take a trip to Orlando for spring break this year and visit Sea World in Orlando. Do you think the murderous orca whale will be euthenized by then so my friends and I are safe while visiting the park? (We refuse to visit Sea World until they destroy the murderous animal). Spring break is in 2 weeks. Asked by I hate mayo yet I'm white - Thu Feb 25 16:01:40 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Since orca whales are endangered, killing it would be illegal. However, there is no danger in going to the park. It's not like it will grow legs and go on a rampage. It will be secluded in a tank away from the public.
