What are the different sounds ferrets make?
Q. I have a 4 month old female who is very playful. When I take her out the cage she runs around with her back hutched and making this sound. Now this sound sounds like she is having fun. Then when i play tug of war with her, she makes this different sound kind of like a hick-up or low cough. Is she running out of breath or getting mad? I'm just curious. When she plays with me she nibbles, but she doesn't actually press down on my fingers with her teeth trying to bite me.

A. Ferrets who are happy have a massive variety of noises. They grunt, hiss, chatter, squeak, bark, 'dook', and any and all combinations of these. Dooking is the noise she makes while running around silly with her back up, or in ferret lingo, doing her war dance! The nibbling without biting is called 'mouthing' and is actually a good thing. Means she is smart enough to realise people don't like to be bitten in play. All in all it sounds like you have a wonderfully happy and healthy little girl. Keep it up. :)

How do I turn the sounds for the computer back on?
Q. I recording something by mistake, and when I pressed the F keys at the top of the keyboard to try and stop recording, I realized I deleted the sounds for the computer. Now I can't even hear the music I play on Windows Media Player or I can't hear the voice on Youtube. Does anyone have a solution?

A. I'm not sure what program you could be using that has F as a hotkey for mute or whatever, but have you checked your volume settings? Go to the system tray (bottom right of your screen, the icons near the time) and look for the volume icon. Click it once to open up the volume bar, twice to open up the volume settings (among other things). Check if you have anything muted.

Sound is the vibration of matter, as perceived by the sense of hearing. Unwanted or annoying sound is often called noise.

  • Which is more musical, a truck passing by a factory or a truck passing by a music school?
    • John Cage, "Communication", the third of the Composition as a Process lectures given in Darmstadt in 1958 and published in Silence. Many of Cage's works use sounds traditionally regarded as unmusical (radios not tuned to any particular station, for instance): he really did believe that the sound of a truck and the sounds made in a factory had just as much musical worth as the sounds made in a music school. There is also a suggestion expressed in the quote that in order to determine the artistic worth of something, it is necessary to examine the context in which it exists.
  • A sound does not view itself as thought, as ought, as needing another sound for its elucidation, as etc.; it has not time for any consideration--it is occupied with the performance of its characteristics: before it has died away it must have made perfectly exact its frequency, its loudness, its length, its overtone structure, the precise morphology of these and of itself.
  • Music has no subject beyond the combinations of notes we hear, for music speaks not only by means of sounds, it speaks nothing but sound.
